Project overview

What is FH2MP?

FH2MP is an unofficial community replacement for the former Forza Horizon 2 online services, maintained by Charelene with contributions from the FH2 community. It uses an external launcher, a game-side mod loaded by FH2 Mod Platform, and a replacement server for matchmaking and in-game social features. It is not Xbox Live and never needs the original services.

Online Free Roam

Join other drivers in the same Horizon world using replacement matchmaking.

Car Meets

Meet players in-game and enter Free Roam together.

Road Trips and events

Vote on destinations, race and use supported party event modes.

Car Clubs

Community clubs, club identities and multiplayer-related pages.

Rivals and leaderboards

Online matchmaking and these in-game features are implemented by the FH2MP project, not restored Microsoft servers. The developer still documents occasional crashes, desync and content limitations.

Older README sections and third-party tutorials still list Azimuth 0.9.10, Extra Options 0.2.98 and Mod Platform 2.7.2. Those correspond to previous builds; v1.1.2 release notes supersede them. Avoid mixing old and new DLL dependencies.

Installation guide

  1. 1

    Make sure Azimuth works

Start the clean Xbox One game through Azimuth before attempting community multiplayer. Back up your saves and original game configuration.

  2. 2

    Download FH2MP Launcher

Open the latest GitHub release. Windows offers an installer and portable ZIP; Linux offers an AppImage and Debian package.

  3. 3

    Launch and select Azimuth

Point the launcher at the folder containing azimuth.exe. It checks the game wrapper and missing required components.

  4. 4

    Install verified dependencies

Allow the launcher to fetch supported FH2 Mod Platform, Extra Options and FH2MP shim files from their official authors, preserving existing settings where supported.

  5. 5

    Create your identity

Choose a gamertag. Save the account recovery code securely; it is the only recovery mechanism for its local account key.

  6. 6

    Play

Choose online or solo/offline mode, then start the game from the launcher and use the built-in online game menus.

For ordinary players, the launcher installs the FH2MP game-side component automatically. A manual shim archive is intended for special setups and development, not the standard installation.

On Linux, use the upstream Proton guidance and the current Mod Platform DLL overrides. Check the README before configuring custom Steam launch options.

Your progress

Accounts, offline mode & saves

Local account key

There is no email or password. FH2MP stores an identity key in the operating system keyring and gives you a recovery code for another PC or a reinstall.

Offline mode

The launcher can start solo play with online services disabled. Existing career progress remains local; the project documents using the same account career in both modes.

Preserving files

The game and Azimuth remain outside the launcher package. Back up your current saves before replacing components or switching between different multiplayer projects.

Project architecture

FH2 Mod Platform & Extra Options

FH2MP uses a game-side DLL loaded through FH2 Mod Platform, with Extra Options as a compatible companion. The launcher uses pinned versions and its own signed update process. Your other installed FH2 mods may coexist, but overlapping hooks or car-database modifications can conflict.

FH2MP 1.1.2 dependency stack

Azimuth 1.0.3
├── FH2 Mod Platform 2.7.4
│ └── FH2MP.dll
└── FH2 Extra Options 0.3.9

On a mixed-mod setup, online sessions may temporarily use the FH2MP server's car database instead of your local modified database. Review the project's README to avoid unexpected car-list changes.

If something goes wrong

Troubleshooting & issue reporting

Launcher says update required

FH2MP checks a signed release manifest. Install the supported release; the server may refuse old launchers and in-game components.

Free Roam cannot find or join a lobby

Confirm the official server is reachable and FH2MP is up to date. Check the known issues page for present network bugs; a stale mod or unsupported vehicle part can cause disconnects.

Game does not start after setup

Make sure the unmodded Xbox One build starts with Azimuth independently. Check that the launcher has selected the folder containing azimuth.exe and let it repair missing pinned dependencies.

Extra Options or Mod Platform conflict

Use the exact versions described by the latest FH2MP release notes. The launcher downloads pinned upstream builds, checks their hashes and preserves other installed mods when possible.

Online game crashes when a player joins

This has been reported upstream. Collect logs and a matching crash dump if available, review the current known-issues document and open a reproducible issue.

Linux controller or launch problem

Check the Steam Proton setup and the launcher's own command configuration. The maintained README documents the DLL overrides needed for its current dependency set.

Recovering an account on a new PC

Keep the recovery code generated at initial setup private. Your FH2MP account uses an OS-protected key, not an email and password.

Logs worth checking

The creator documents data/logs/azimuth.log, data/bin/fh2mp.log and fh2-mods/platform.log. Your launcher log is in its OS-specific cache directory. Review any diagnostic files before sending them.

Keep in mind that known issues can lag behind a recent release. Report reproducible new bugs through the maintainer's GitHub tracker, not the Azimuth developer.

Common questions

FAQ

Is FH2MP the official Xbox Live service?

No. FH2MP is an independent community replacement server and launcher. It does not connect to Microsoft's former online services.

Is FH2MP the same as Infinity Horizon?

No. They use different online services, launchers and game-side hooks. Do not combine the two installations without verified compatibility.

Do I need Azimuth?

Yes. FH2MP needs a compatible Xbox One build of Forza Horizon 2 already running on PC through Azimuth.

Which Azimuth works?

FH2MP 1.1.2 release notes explicitly target Azimuth 1.0.3. Older articles listing 0.9.10 refer to a previous dependency set.

Is it only for Windows?

No. The developer provides Windows x64 installers and Linux AppImage / Debian builds, with the game running through Proton on Linux.

Do I need an email account?

No. Your account is created with a local secret key; keep its recovery code safe. You can choose a gamertag and optional picture.

Can I play by myself?

Yes. Offline mode disables online/server features while allowing the game to launch through the FH2MP application.

Does it include the game or its DLC?

No. You must supply your own compatible FH2 game content. DLC online functionality may be incomplete.

Does it support other mods?

It loads through FH2 Mod Platform alongside compatible mods, but online car databases and overlaps can impose restrictions. Read the project's compatibility notes.

Infinity Horizon & other multiplayer solutions

FH2MP and Infinity Horizon both aim to bring multiplayer back to FH2, but each uses its own service and compatibility model. They are not interchangeable hooks.
