What exactly is Azimuth?
Azimuth is an unofficial compatibility wrapper developed by Almost There Games. It runs supported Xbox One Forza game code on Windows and through Proton on Linux. Rather than emulating an entire console, it translates Xbox runtime services and graphics calls to desktop equivalents, including DirectX 12.
It is not an official PC port, does not include or decrypt game content, and does not provide Xbox Live services. Since version 1.0, Azimuth has a redesigned multi-game launcher, automatic game discovery, a save-management screen and a photo gallery.

Getting the right files
Official download & safety
Get Azimuth directly from the developer's official itch.io page. The listed Windows archive is named azimuth-windows.zip. The developer allows you to choose what to pay, including zero.
Only use the developer's release
Avoid mirrors and repacked “all-in-one” installers. Do not disable antivirus or blindly run scripts suggested by a third-party guide. The official archive includes the wrapper, not Forza game data.
The independent azimuthforza.com guide was last reviewed around version 0.9.10. This FH2Mods guide instead prioritizes the developer's 1.0 and 1.0.3 release notes.
Before installing
System requirements
| Operating system | Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit), or Linux via Proton |
|---|---|
| Processor | A CPU supporting F16C (check your exact model) |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM as the developer's baseline; demanding presets may need more |
| Graphics | A DirectX 12-capable GPU; Steam Deck-class performance is a useful developer reference, not a guarantee |
| Game | Your own compatible Xbox One Forza game files; Azimuth does not provide them |
| Input | Xbox-compatible controller; DirectInput racing wheels are experimental |
Earlier official requirements excluded Intel integrated graphics. Azimuth 1.0 fixed certain Intel rendering artifacts, but that is not a blanket compatibility guarantee. For low-end devices, start at Default or Low; performance estimates are not promises for every setup.
First launch
Install Azimuth step by step
- 1
Download the official archive
Open the developer's itch.io page and save the current Windows ZIP.
- 2
Extract the complete archive
Keep all launcher files together in a folder you control. Do not run the executable inside the ZIP.
- 3
Prepare your own supported game folder
For Forza Horizon 2, select the Xbox One build 1.0.0.64, with era.vbi, Mount and EmbeddedXvd at the top level.
- 4
Launch azimuth.exe
The Azimuth 1.0 launcher searches nearby folders and any location you point it to. You can also choose a game's folder manually.
- 5
Confirm the game and settings
Choose a sensible resolution, use Default quality first, and configure your preferred input and audio layout.
- 6
Start the game
Allow initial graphics preparation. Add mods only after you verify the clean base game works.
Expected FH2 game-folder structure

Do not select the launcher folder or the Mount folder itself. For the game's actual assets you need your own appropriately obtained Xbox One copy. See the FH2Mods installation tutorial for additional help.

Graphics, display & performance
Resolution & ultrawide
Choose your display resolution or supersample up to 2× your display height, capped at 4320p. The games support non-16:9 display shapes.
Frame rate
30, 60 and higher refresh-rate targets are available. Since 1.0, the old Frame pacing toggle is removed and games run in real time.
Graphics presets
Low is lighter than the console preset; Default tracks the original console profile. High and Ultra raise detail at greater GPU and memory cost.
Advanced graphics
Tune scenery detail, shadow sharpness, shadow distance, shadow redraw and reflections separately, instead of raising everything together.
Reflections & MSAA
Reflections at High or Ultra refresh mirrors each frame as of 1.0.3, with a performance cost. MSAA choices include Off, 2× and 4×.
HDR & language
HDR10 output and calibration are available on supported displays. Game text and speech can be selected separately where offered.
Performance after an update
Azimuth 1.0 introduced extensive rendering and scheduling optimizations; its author reports gains of up to 40% in some cases. Shader and pipeline rebuilding can still introduce hitches. Compare the same route on Default after caches have warmed, not immediately after a major update.
Higher resolution, Ultra scenery detail, high-frequency reflections and long-distance shadows can be demanding. If FPS is unstable, lower individual Advanced graphics options before changing everything at once.
Input and sound
Controllers, steering wheels & audio
Gamepads & wheels
Xbox-compatible controllers are supported. Experimental DirectInput racing-wheel support includes force feedback, configurable rotation (180–1080°), shifters and handbrakes where hardware provides them. In 1.0.3, binding support was improved and force-feedback strength gained a 0–150% setting.
Language & sound
Choose text and spoken language separately where supported, and select System, Stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 speaker output. Version 1.0 added per-game volume; sound-device handling and switching were improved in the 1.0 series.
For a clean exit from an FH2 game, the developer documents holding the controller's Back/View button or Esc for about two seconds.
Extra content
Storm Island & Fast & Furious
Azimuth can register content packages separately from the base game. On FH2, the developer documents Storm Island 1.0.0.36, and the standalone Fast & Furious 1.0.0.6 as experimental. Keep each compatible package in its own folder and add it through the launcher's game/content management controls.
Remember
An unlock option or third-party mod is not a substitute for an expansion's required game files. Azimuth does not bundle DLC or make every historical FH2 expansion compatible.
Keep your progress
Save games, backups & updating
Before upgrading
Close the game and make a copy of your existing Azimuth data folder. Keep a separate backup until you have verified your saves.
New launcher in 1.0
Existing registered games and packages are carried over; settings become game-specific. The launcher adds a Saves area with convenient backup controls.
Migrating from older versions
Azimuth 0.9.9 changed the save layout. If migrating from a much older installation, preserve or copy the old data before the first launch of the newer wrapper.
After an update
Graphics preparation can run again after a major release. Avoid downgrading old saves to incompatible builds without checking the developer's migration notes.
Fixing problems
Troubleshooting checklist
Start by writing down the Azimuth version, game build, graphics preset, when the problem happens and the exact error. If possible, reproduce issues in a separate, unmodified installation without losing your existing save.
Crashes on launch
Check that you are running the official current wrapper and the expected game build. Keep the exact message and azimuth.log; a crash code alone is not a diagnosis. Test a separate, unmodified installation.
Preparing graphics takes a long time
Major updates rebuild shaders and graphics pipelines. A slower first launch can be normal. If preparation never ends, save your log and distinguish a stall from ordinary cache rebuilding.
Stutter during gameplay
Try the Default graphics preset first and allow caches to warm while playing. The developer has described post-update shader stutter; this does not mean every persistent hitch has the same cause.
Black screen or endless race loading
Older builds had fixes for car and race loading. Update, check game files and collect logs; a black screen does not have a single confirmed fix.
No sound or wrong speaker layout
Confirm the operating system output device and select an appropriate Stereo, 5.1, 7.1 or System layout. Audio-device switching was improved in Azimuth 1.0.
Controller or wheel does not work
Check the game's input mapping and launcher control configuration. DirectInput wheels remain experimental; Azimuth 1.0.3 improved binding and force-feedback initialization.
Security software flags a file
Do not turn off security protection based on a forum post. Confirm the official source and investigate any detection with your security vendor.
Modified game has issues
Back up your data and test an independent clean game and fresh save when reporting to the wrapper developer. Mod-specific issues belong to the mod creator.
Reporting a verified wrapper bug
Use the launcher's About page to locate azimuth.log (historically under data/logs/azimuth.log). The developer requires the LOG for every report and a DMP for crashes, and asks for a fresh unmodified game plus fresh save when reporting performance problems.
The official report address is [email protected]. It collects bug reports automatically and is not a general questions inbox. Review logs for personal information before sending.
